Design Statement

Brief

The simple formal language of the project draws on the abstraction of the local vernacular. Each of the house is distinctly finished in pastel pink and pastel yellow, internally, and externally in the two most common colours found in village houses in Hungary.

Organized as a single-level home, the formal of the house, although linear and long, its spatial arrangement is break up by an entrance courtyard, centre courtyard, and back garden, which allows every key room in the house to bathe in light and views.

Description

Designed and built by architect-developer couple as their first countryside home, the project explores new housing typology for young families on a plot near the lake located in Vitnyed, close to Austria border in west Hungary. The project contains two independent and mirrored 3-bedrooms houses.

Organised as a single-level home, the layout is arranged with dining and open kitchen, the contemporary social space at the front, study and bedrooms in the middle whereas main living area at the back with view to the natural landscape and lake. Though linear and long, the spatial arrangement is interspersed by series of internal courtyards and garden.

The entrance courtyard acts as a buffer from the street and parking garage, centre courtyard allows the bedrooms on both sides to become garden rooms with privacy from adjacent neighbours, and back garden that allows every key space in the house an opportunity to be naturally lit and ventilated whilst attuned to varying atmospheres of the weather and time.

The house is cladded with pigmented concrete plaster in pastel pink and pastel yellow, internally and externally, as an ode to the most commonly found colours of the villages houses in Hungary. Finished with oak joineries, the material palette chosen aims to create a warm yet playful mood with ability for the materials to age and weather in a beautiful manner.

While drawing reference from traditional barn house, broad overhang at the front and back of the house introduces a sculptural quality to the building. These shaded spaces are intended as an extension of the house to the landscape or as parking garage. The formal simplicity is enriched by making the parapets in brickwork and concealing all rainwater downpipes and gutters within the building envelope. However, a low eaves is maintained to give the building a humbling and approachable size.
